Truth, man that is a hard thing to pin down in this day & age. There seems to be variations of, or shades of truth that fills every facet of our lives. It is hard, not impossible mind you, but hard to find the real truth in this world of changing values. This is precisely the reason there are so many people out in the world who are "religious" classified as "seekers". They are seeking truth that makes sense to them, their life & the world. The lines are blurred by society, the world, and sad to say by you and me.
Whether we want to admit it or not we all have double standards. Our judgement is clouded when it involves a friend, family member and ourselves. We think, well there ought to be different standards for "special occassions and circumstances". You see it is hard to set down this true & fair stuff and it really be true & fair. Life is easy when things are black & white. It really is a shame that only a few things are black & white.
All of us had rules around the house when our children were growing up. Now the grandchildren have come on the scene, well let's just say they are not rules as much as they are general guidelines. General guidelines might be to hard and fast, more like, suggestions to be glanced over from time to time. Oh never mind there are no real rules. The grandchildren are at NaNa & Pops, life is to short for so many rules. Beds are made to be jumped on, that grape juice spilled on the carpet, we were going to change that out for more durable floors anyway. You Parents get so upset over things like running through the house screeching like a teradactile.( Not up on dinosaurs spelling right now.) They are laughing we are laughing, what's the problem?
God set down 10,count them 10, rules to follow so what did we do? Immediately we came up with 100s of rules & guidelines to follow the guidelines set down to follow the rules. This truth thing is tiring isn't it?God is not complicating our lives, WE are!
Mt. 19:23-28 3 times Jesus says, "I tell you the truth", so we might want to slow down, sit down, hush and listen to what He is saying to us. In John 14:6 Jesus says, "I am the way, The Truth and the life". Could it be that if we seek Him then all of this truth stuff will fall into place? Sounds like a plan, ReThink Possible!!!

How Can I Be A Part of God's Plan?
ReThink Possible is such a catchy little phrase. It is almost whimsical in that it is like a key to a door we never knew existed, let alone gone through. Don't you just love new experiences, adventures and the BIG POSSIBILITY of the future. It is exciting, you know like waking up early Christmas morning and seeing all the gifts under the tree. That is what our possibilities are like. All we have to do is act upon faith in God to expand our borders.
To many of us as we grow older seem to lose the ability to think outside the box. Some of us can't even find the box at times, let alone think outside it. We are stuck doing the same ole things in the same ole ways, and complaining that nothing ever changes. DUH. This, my friend, is living in the heart of Hohumville. This place is filled with streets like, Boring Ave., Blah Street, No Way Blvd., and Sighway Road to name a few. Now we all go there at times but we don't have to build a house there do we?
Is this how the Creator of the Universe intends his children to live? I think Not! However, we do seem to spend an inordinate amount of time here for some reason. Why is That? UNBELIEF has to be the culprit in my estimation. We don't believe that the Awesome God we sing about in our hymns, chorus, and Praise songs is interested in our boring mundane lives.
WRONG, we must allow God to work in us and through us. Ask and it shall be given unto you I believe the Scripture says. Ask God to open our eyes & hearts to what he has for us during this time. What do we have to lose? Our dull and boring Christian lives!! Let's ReThink Possible. Read Romans 4:21

What's In It For Us?
Matthew 19:27 Peter, God love him, he is so like us, or should that be we are so like him. After listening to Jesus for a few minutes he comes up with the "perfect question". "Hey what's in this for us?" Don't you just love this guy! He is just saying what many of us have thought to ourselves at times. Man that stings a bit doesn't it?
Bro Doug was talking about with some people enough, it seems is never enough. Well Peter was just going back to his roots, you know our selfish side that looks out for #1. We all do it from time to time face it the problem is we are human. We want to be taken care of, getting our fair share. We want what we are due.
When our children were younger there was never a week that went by that we were not settleing disagreements for something or other. Sometimes it was who was getting the biggest slice of pie or cake. Boy I sort of wish the kids were back at times so I could get a pie or cake, I regress sorry. Anyway we would have to tell them that one would cut and the other would get to choose first. Now this called for some precise measurements. I think no satellite directed laser or the most skilled surgeon could have cut those pieces any straighter or even. Man they were even! Oh there would be no mistake everyone would get the EXACT same amount.
How about us today, have we really progressed any farther than Peter? Do we barter with God? "God you know I've been good and done this, done that, endured this, and endured that, how about a break here?" No we would never do that, now we know others who would, but not us. Jesus answered Peter, (and us), "I tell you the truth". May be we should ought to wait & see what God has for us before we call out, "Hey what's in it for us".
Just a thought

We Just Can't Do It!
Matthew 19:25 This verse has always been one that I have identified with, that is so me. They were astonished, no greatly astonished at this saying. How can this be? As a man this not being able to "DO" something is unnerving, to say the least. Our society & cultural upbringing to be "the hunter, gatherers, the fixers doesn't come into play here. Lets face it most of us are not accustomed to sitting back & waiting on God to "do it for us".
Our whole society today has been built on people who were self-starters, go-getters, not one to sit back but to get in the middle of everything. It is so much harder to sit back and allow God to work. Harder still is WAITING on God, "shouldn't I be doing something", is the code we live by.
When our children were growing up they "had" to mow the yard. Now our yard is about the size of 2 postage stamps in the front & 3 in the back. To teach them responsibility and helping out at home was the plan. It KILLED me, they took hours, often a couple of them literally took hours to mow this yard which at best was a 20 minute job. Sometimes I had to leave the house for reasons of my sanity. "Why does it take an hour & a half to do this?" The reason, simply put they didn't want to do it! Here I was trying to teach them and God was teaching me. That just doesn't seem fair does it? There are somethings you cannot do your way. God said "Butch you need me even in these small areas".
I have visions of them all learning to mow & weedeat & whistling while they were doing it and enjoying it like I do. Didn't happen is an understatement. God had a vision for me, to allow him to teach me about other matters. Talk about a slow learner, remember we had 4 children. Remember the Bible says that with GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
Maybe we should listen to Him!

Remember the Lord Your God
In 2007 the church I was working at closed it's doors and I found myself without a job. As many of you have experienced during the economic downturn, losing a job can be a stressful time. At that time the Lord took me to the passage where he provided daily bread for the Isrealites.
Take time this weekend to reflect on all the Lord has given you. Spend time writing out a list of all the things God has given you, all the ways He has blessed you, list ways He has/is providing, list relationships, thank Him for all things big and all things small.
I love verse 7-10 because it shows the reward for walking in God's ways and fearing Him. He will bring us into a good land, we will lack nothing, we will eat and be full and we will bless Him because we have seen his mighty hand work in our lives.
May you be obedient to trust the Lord for your daily provision.
Patrick
Exodus 16:4 4Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
The Lord taught Emily and I that He was and is our daily provider. Whether it be money or food or whatever, God is our daily provider. As a result of this truth Emily and I began saying a new prayer. Whether it be a meal or when we give our offering we pray this prayer; "Jesus that you for your provision today, we trust you to provide for us tomorrow." When I realize that all I have, from my health to my wealth, comes from the Lord it gives me perspective. He is the Sovereign Lord Creator of The Universe and Savior of my soul. Who am I? A sinner, a beggar, unworthy. I am grateful for his provision. Take a moment to read the following passage:
Deuteronomy 8:2-10 And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. 6So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.

Cultivating Dependence on God
I was reading this article as a part of my study on fasting and thought it worthwhile to share.
I pray you grow in your dependence on the Lord Jesus. I pray you are different today than your were yesterday as a result of drawing near to God.
May we love Jesus as the Father loves Him,

Spiritual Fitness - Part 2
Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
1 Timothy 4:7-8 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Endurance. This word strikes fear in the heart of every kid that shops in the "husky" section at JC Penny. When it comes to endurance, some people are built for it and take to it naturally but for most of us it comes only through discipline. It is gained slowly and lost quickly.
You may have heard the joke about the two guys in the woods who hear the roar of a grizzly bear. At the sound of the roar one of the men sits down to put on his running shoes. The other man laughs, "Do you really think you can outrun that bear?" The first man replies "Of course I'm not going to outrun that bear. I don't have to. I just have to out run you."
When it comes to the Christian life it's not how you start, it's how you finish. The Christian journey is about endurance. It is a marathon not a sprint. So, how do we gain endurance? We train. How do you train physically? You discipline your body to exert more energy each time you train. In our spiritual life our exercise is prayer.
Steve Farrar, in his book Point Man, states:
"Prayer is to the soul what exercise is to the body. A spiritual self-starter is a person who is in good spiritual shape. That means he/she does two things: (1) He/she consistently eats the nutritious diet of the Scriptures; and (2) he/she consistently spends time in aerobic kneeling (prayer)."
Although Scripture is silent about how much time a person should spend in prayer, it does stress the importance of time spent with the Father. Please allow me to propose some tools for measurement. How much time do you spend talking with those you love? If our love for our family members is to look like hate compared to our love for Jesus, shouldn't we spend time with Him daily? If you are in a relationship, would you be satisfied if the amount of time you spent with Jesus was the same as the time your husband/wife spent with you?
Let me encourage you to pray, train in godliness daily that you might run with endurance the race set before you.
Here are a few tips as you plan your spiritual exercise:
1. Plan a time.
2. Plan a place.
3. Make a list. What will you specifically pray about?
4. Begin with Scripture.
5. Make yourself accountable to someone.
*List found in Steve Farrar's Point Man
Start your spiritual workout this week!! It will be tough at first. Pace yourself, make a plan, stick with it and endurance will come. Remember it's not how you start it's how you finish.
Train to finish well.

Spiritual Fitness - Part 1
Psalm 1:1-3
1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
Several weeks ago I made a visit to the doctor to visit with him about my health. I resolved that I was not satisfied with my health and decided that I needed to change my habits. I looked ahead to my future and made decisions/goals for how I wanted to live and interact with my children and my wife. We spent time talking about the importance of diet and exercise as a part of my daily routine. The Doc said diet would help me drop unwanted weight and exercise would help with my fitness. As I have been working out, the Lord has brought many spiritual parallels to my mind.
First he took me to 1 Timothy 6:8, For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
He reminded me that physical training did hold value but not as much as if I train in godliness with a solid diet of God's Word and the exercise of prayer.
Today I'd like to focus on our diet; tomorrow we'll look at exercise. Psalm 1 above says the person who delights in the Word of God is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit, constantly growing and prospering. Are you planted by the stream? Do you daily draw nutrition from the Word of the Lord? or are you anorexic? Do you starve yourself of God's Word?
Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
Deuteronomy 32:46-47 says, "he said to them, "Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess."
The Word of God is our very life. How will you discipline yourself to ingest a steady diet of God's Word? Do you have a plan in place? In your fast, are you replacing the time you would have spent eating that food or the time you would have consumed in that activity with time in your Bible? Let me encourage you to get a plan in place. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:27, "But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." A plan will help you in your discipline. Pray and ask the Lord to help you with your discipline. Tell a fellow believer about your plan and ask them to hold you accountable in your discipline.
Here are some ideas*:
1. Read through the Bible in one year.
2. Listen to the Bible
3. Start a Scripture memory program
4. Get involved in a Bible Study
5. Form a small accountability group
*list found in Steve Farrar's Point Man
Still need help? The staff would love to help you build this discipline into your life. Please let us know if we can help you.
My prayer is that through these 40 days you will become like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.
which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.
We are sustained by Him alone,
Patrick

Helena's Psalm
Our students have just returned from an incredible week serving at Mission Arlington. Our 7 students spent each day this past week emptying themselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Each day they were up early heading to a worship service at the Mission. Then they went to the first apartment property to lead Rainbow Express (a backyard Bible club). At the Rainbow Express they went around to the different homes and recruited kids and brought them to the common area. They played with kids and then had a song time, memory verse, heard testimonies from our students, and a short Bible story followed by a craft time.
This is the verse that our students taught each day, twice a day. It was great watching the kids memorize God's Word. Lauren led the charge to help the kids memorize by saying the verse first fast then v-e-r-y s-l-o-w, then we said it like a pirate (my favorite) and a then like a dog. Each day we would recall the verse.
One little girl, Helena, had the verse memorized the very first day and knew it each of the following days. It was incredible, not only to watch her recite the verse, but the confidence with which she said it. You could see the belief in her face that she truly believed God's Word to be the guide and sustaining power in her life.
Do you believe God's Word to be the guide and sustaining power in your life? Is it evident in your life?
The Psalmist compares the Word to a Lamp and a Light. We live in a dark, wicked, and depraved world. How do you navigate life? Do you stumble in the darkness or do you take hold of the Light? Do you depend on God's Word as you would a flashlight in a dark unknown wilderness?
As you fast, don't think about what you have given up. Don't speak publicly about your fast. Think about what gain you have in the person of Jesus. God reveals Himself through Scripture. Take time this week to soak your mind in Scripture.

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Psalm 119:97
My prayer for you today is that you would discover the sustaining life-guiding compass of Scripture.
Where should you start? I'd spend time meditating on Psalm 119. You can't help but be influenced by the Psalmist love for God's Word.
Blessings to you in the name of Jesus,

It's Friday!!!
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you...Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:7-8, and 10 (NIV)
As I approach each day anew this week in the midst of my fast, this verse comes to mind. It's almost like clockwork...The split second I declare to God what I have chosen to fast from each morning, asking for strength in the midst of temptation, I am confronted with that small voice in the back of my mind that is ever working to plant the seed of sin. "You'll never make it 40 days," it says. "It's not that big of a deal, do you really think God hears your prayers anymore now that you are fasting a meal or 2?"
But then I am reminded of this passage from the book of James, as well as others such as Philippians 4:13.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
As well as one of my favorite passages:
...That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day." 2 Tim. 1:12
It's now Friday, and we have been denying ourselves that one thing which we chose to fast from for the next 40 days. How are you holding up? Let me encourage you...when you hear that small voice sewing seeds of doubt and temptation, rebuke him in the name of Christ. Proclaim James 4:7, and ask God to give you strength. For the Psalmist declares:
"God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble!" Ps. 46:1 (NIV)
Then, focus your prayers. I've said it before, I'll say it again: God wants to do a mighty work here...join with me in praying that He does, then expect it!!!
So, I will leave you with these words of encouragement as we approach the weekend:
Stay the course! Stand your ground! Stand on the Solid Rock! 40 days of fasting is not an easy task. If it were, I would suggest, you need to rethink what you've chosen to fast from.
May the Word of Christ dwell in you richly...

"Further Reflections on the Sustaining Power of God vs. Science"
"Indian hermit stuns doctors by surviving without food"
I came across this article and felt it could really aid our discussion of God's sustaining power vs. medical science. Obviously, there are some loopholes...for one, this man in absolutely no way gives credit to God for his survival. In fact, it is much the opposite! He credits a man-made religion. So...no. I am not using him as an example of one that has survived depending solely on God. But, let's take a deeper look at principles at work here.
Most doctors agree that you survive without food on average 8 weeks if you have water. If you do the math, that is 56 days. The man in the article claims to have lived for 70 years without food or water. I believe the report said he had been in the hospital for monitoring 180 days alreadywithout food and water. The doctors proclaim him to be a miracle. Further, we find in the scriptures that Jesus survived 40 days on water alone. Personally, when presented with the idea of fasting for the full 40 days, my mind races with thoughts of doubt, and I'm fairly confident that I am not alone. 40 days is a long time! But, why do we continue to let the seed of doubt that Satan plants in our minds to stifle any opportunity for God to work. Just earlier this year, when approaching our current budget, we approached it as an opportunity for us to do something (i.e. cut spending, and increase tithing), rather than allowing GOD to do something great!
So, I conclude with a referral to yesterday's post. We must absolve to approach all things with an attitude of child-like faith, and rebuke our adversary when he attempts to sew the seeds of doubt.
God desires to do something great here, in a mighty way. We should let Him!

"The Buzz and Woody Filled Heaven"
If there are any benefits to having children, it's that I have learned exponentially more about the nature of God as our Heavenly Father from them and my interactions with them. (Not to mention the fact that they always provide great lesson illustrations!!!)
Both of the girls have ecstatically adopted "Toy Story" (all 3) as their favorite movie, although, for Cadence I'm afraid it may be getting replaced with Disney's recent production, "Tangled." Our house is filled with toys, action figures, clothes, and other sorts of "Toy Story" ( or as it is known in our house, "Buzz and Woody") paraphernalia that you would not believe. For instance, did you know that there is a "Buzz and Woody" line of the old board game, "Chutes and Ladders?" We didn't either, but grandma found it at Christmas, and we now have Buzz and Woody "Chutes and Ladders."
The idea and concept of Toy Story, and the lovable characters are such an integral part of my girls lives, that if Katie and I were to begin teaching the girls that Heaven is not a place to share eternity at the right hand of God Almighty, but rather a place to spend eternity with Buzz, Woody and the rest of the gang, they would accept this fact no questions asked, and eagerly look forward to playing with the real, life-size, "Slinky-dog" verses the plastic version that spends most of his time scattered on their floor. They have so much faith that what Katie and I as their parents teach them, that at this point, they wholeheartedly accept it...no questions asked. (I do feel it necessary to interject here that we do in fact teach them of Heaven being an eternity at the right had of God Almighty...not flying, or "falling with style" around the clouds on the wings of Buzz. Just to be clear.)
As I revisit Matthew's account of the "Good News," (our Sermon text from Sunday), and reflect on vs. 20-21 of chapter 17, I am drawn to Jesus' statement concerning faith.

"Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." (NIV)
What a massive statement from our Lord and Savior! However, I think you have to read on to grasp the real magnitude of the kind of faith that Jesus is discussing. If you go just a few verses further into chapter 18, Jesus tell us..."I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." (NIV)
I have spent many hours debating, heatedly I might add, with myself about the issue of fasting. We are told many times throughout the scriptures that God is our provider, and that great traditional hymn, "O Worship the King," describes Him as, "Our Savior, Sustainer, Redeemer, and Friend!!!" Why then do we choose to argue whether or not God can sustain one that chooses to partake in a full 40 day fast just as Jesus did in the wilderness?! To be honest with you, my mind cannot comprehend it. Let's face it, I like to eat... and if there is one thing I/we are good at it's rationalizing.
I've come to the conclusion, that God mostly wants us to move beyond the debates, beyond the uncertainties, beyond the unknown, and simply trust what He has told us. Just as if I were to teach Cadence that Heaven were filled with the world of "Buzz and Woody." As you approach these next 40 days, pray in faith that God will do great things in our lives, church, community, county, state, and country. I do believe that God is going to do some great things here, let us move ourselves and selfish desires out of the way, and proclaim the statement made by the demon possessed boy's father we discussed Sunday: "I do believe, help my unbelief!"

Rethink Possible: 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting
40 days of prayer and fasting. I suspect that to many Baptists, this whole concept of fasting is somewhat foreign. I must confess, that it wasn't until I began attending a Methodist University that the idea became so familiar to me. But as I've grown, and studied the scriptures I found fasting to have the potential to be one of the most fruitful practices we can exercise both individually in our walk with Christ, as well as corporately.
As we approach this season of self-denial, prayer, and repentance here are a few tips to guide you in your observance of this rite we are approaching:
